Which Workbench Do You Actually Need?

Which Workbench Do You Actually Need?

Every shop needs a good work surface, but the kind of bench you build depends a lot on your space and how you like to work. When I started woodworking I thought there was just one type of workbench but oh was I wrong. Here are five solid options:

1. Classic Hand-Tool Bench: Heavy, stationary, thick top (2-4"), built-in vice and dog holes. If you do a lot of traditional woodworking, this is the gold standard.

2. Mobile Workbench: A rolling tank. Good storage with drawers or open shelving, and easy to move wherever you need it.

3. Fold-Down Workbench: No storage, but it folds flat against the wall. Add retractable casters and it’s surprisingly stable while saving you a ton of space.

4. Wall-Mounted Folding Bench: Folds up into the wall like a Murphy bed. Super compact, mobile if you add wheels, and a great choice for tiny shops.

5. Portable Workbench: Collapsible and easy to carry around. Great for jobs outside the shop, quick clamping tasks, or when you need a temporary surface that sets up fast.

6. Foldable Desk (Bonus): Not a true bench, but perfect if you just need a place to sketch ideas, do light assembly, or add a little extra storage without eating up floor space.

At the end of the day, the best bench is the one that fits your shop and your workflow. If you’ve got the room, go classic or mobile. If you’re tight on space, fold-down or wall-mounted will be your best friends.
